Cascais its beaches and marina, Estoril its golf course and casino
Cascais, once a fishing town, has become a famous seaside resort with its superb marina and its bourgeois houses. Only 30 minutes from Lisbon, Cascais is a peaceful and refined town. You will be able to see historical buildings on the seafront such as the Casa de Santa Maria or the Castro Guimaraes Museum. In the continuity of this beautiful city, you will discover Estoril and its casino, the largest in Europe, which will welcome you with pleasure whether you are a professional, gambling enthusiast or not. After that you will certainly need to relax and enjoy the beaches or take a walk along the coast. Then cross the beautiful natural park of Sintra and go to the Priaia do Guincho beach to admire the surfers trying to tame the waves of this turbulent sea. Continue on to Cabo da Roca, with its lighthouse, the last westernmost piece of land in Europe before the vastness of the Atlantic Sea.
Sintra : its historical and architectural monuments
Further north, 20 minutes from Lisbon and overlooking a pretty valley with pine forests, it is Sintra turn to introduce itself to you. This city rich in history will not leave you indifferent. Sintra being one on a hill, with narrow and winding streets, you will have to park in one of the many car parks below. Then you will have the choice: for the more sporty, you will discover the city on foot to reach on the heights the Palacio Nacional da Pena, the Capuchin convent, or the Palacio Nacional da Sintra (the national palace of Sintra), the Palace of Monserrate. For the less adventurous, take the little train that will take you to its incredibly beautiful sites. Other moments will also fill you with wonder. Visit the Quinta da Regaleira (Regaleira Palace), a sumptuous residence with magnificent gardens. Finally, climb up to the rampart of Castello dos Mouros (the Moorish castle) which dominates all this magnificent region with its trees and pine forest. The views are breathtaking.
Caparica and Aroeira : between golf and lazing by the sea
Do you like golf, the beach and good typical restaurants by the sea? Then you should definitely go to Caparica and a little further south, Aroeira. You will just have to go back to Lisbon and cross the river by the bridge of April 25th. On the other side of the river, make a stop in Almada, a popular district, where the Cristo de Rei rises on the heights and contemplates the whole city of Lisbon. The view is magical. Once you arrive in Caparica and Aroeira, these two seaside resorts with their 40 km of coastline and beach are very popular places for golf enthusiasts and will allow you to enjoy beautiful moments of relaxation far from the frenzy of the capital.
From Setubal to Comporta : in the heart of nature reserves
Then head even further south and you will reach Setubal and Azeitao, with the Arrabida Natural Park in the middle, a large unspoilt mountainous area with a view of the sea and the incomparable Troia Peninsula. Don't forget to pass through Sesimbra and continue on to the Cape Espichel Lighthouse. If you enjoy driving, and you like to travel and discover the landscape by road, you will drive around the sea to the very select and famous village of Comporta. Comporta is this trendy little place with exclusive villas facing this beautiful lagoon, sand dunes and sea as far as the eye can see. You will sometimes see horseback riding enthusiasts enjoying their favorite pastime on a beautiful morning riding along its miles of quiet beaches and breathing the fresh air. If driving doesn't motivate you but you still want to be in this dream place, take the ferryboat from Setubal. The crossing takes only 20 minutes and you will arrive in Troia, a small residential village at the top of this long peninsula, and then go down to Comporta. Gourmets and gourmets will be able to enjoy excellent seafood and grilled fish, among other things.
