It is about 7 metres long and can accommodate a crew of 8 to 12 people. The Martinique yole is a very light and fast boat that has been used for centuries by the island's fishermen and sailors. Today, it is mainly used for racing in the famous Tour des Yoles Rondes, an annual competition that attracts thousands of spectators.
The yawls are painted in bright colours and often have original and creative names. Each yawl is also equipped with a drum, played by one of the crew members, to set the rhythm for the sailing. The Tour des Yoles :
The Tour des Yoles Rondes is a traditional sailing race that takes place every year in Martinique. It is one of the most important sporting events on the island and attracts thousands of spectators each year.
The race consists of a series of stages that take place over several days, with crews sailing around the island in yoles rondes, traditional Martinican boats with square sails.
The Tour des Yoles Rondes usually takes place in July and begins with an opening parade in Fort-de-France, the island's capital. Crews in colourful uniforms sail down the bay, escorted by security boats and cheered by spectators. The race then takes place over several days, with stages in the main towns and villages of the island, such as Sainte-Anne, Le Marin, Trinité, Saint-Pierre, etc. The crews compete to be the fastest, while respecting the rules of the race and the other competitors. The round skiffs are powered by the wind and require a great deal of coordination and skill on the part of the crew. The races are often very competitive and sometimes end in sprint finishes.

Spectators can enjoy the festive atmosphere, music, dance and local gastronomy. It is a unique event that celebrates the island's maritime tradition and history.
